Mitchell. They met for years until their unique & different Lifestyles slowed. Then, because of renewed associations with a couple of other friends, enter two more Literary Ladies - Barbara Eubanks and Lori Boatfield !

In the fall of 2005, the Ladies met and agreed they needed a Literary Support Group – a critique group. That idea became a reality when these five local authors began meeting once a month. Hence, they then had to come up with a name for the Group !

They now call themselves "THE LIT CHICKS"... No-o-o, it’s not what you think. We are all sober, dignified (well, for the most part) ladies. LIT refers to our common bond - a literary interest. More specifically, we are all authors, wordsmiths - Gay Martin, a well-known, well-established food and travel author; Alice Duckett, formerly from Albertville, now living in Anniston, has written for several newspapers, including The Gadsden Times; Shirley Mitchell, an author who not only writes about making the most of life at any age, but one who lives out her words; Barbara Eubanks, an author who blends devotions with humor and a Christian humorist who tells audiences that God wants them to be happy, and Lori Boatfield, a talented essayist and a great novelist-in-the-making, bring a plethora of ideas and interesting pieces of writing to each meeting, We have found great strength and encouragement for our individual literary endeavors and development for our talents by listening to and sharing with each other.

No group of Southern Ladies can have a meeting without involving food ! The Lit Chicks are no different. As we rotate the site of our meeting among the homes of the members, we not only look forward to being sounding-boards for each others work-in-progress, but we delight in, and look forward to, the great refreshments (which now have evolved into full gourmet meals) the hostess provides.

How nice it is to have this comfortable haven to freely share successes without appearing braggadocios, to unburden stresses and personal crises without being labeled whiners, to criticize without being mean-spirited, and to accept criticisms with great appreciation, for these are the stones on which we sharpen our writing skills !

Lit Chick Gay Martin...

"As a student teacher at Albertville High School, I was lucky to have Barbara Eubanks as my supervising teacher," said Gay Martin. She stays busy promoting her book with speaking engagements for genealogy societies, ladies clubs, school groups, libraries, churches, and seniors citizens gatherings. "Digging From Attics To Basements" is a “how-to” book on finding family history through fun activities for the whole family. Currently Alice is working on Book 2 in the Family History Series called "More Digging From Attics To Basements". The Author, Educator, Speaker, and Journalist, has published more than 350 articles, columns, and feature pieces across the Southeast. She is the winner of 11 writing awards in state, regional and southeastern contests. She completed 31 years of teaching in public schools with experience from 2nd-12th grades, plus teaching single-parenting classes for adults. Ms. Duckett’s book reflects her interest in helping families work together to discover the past and make connections for the future. The Author emphasizes, “ Children in today’s fast-paced world need identity. What better way to know yourself than to discover who you came from and where, when, why, and how. Finding family history gives children a strong connection to family members and strengthens identity and self-esteem.” What better gift could a parent or grandparent hand down to children or grandchildren than their own history recorded in this easy to understand book. Just follow the footsteps in the workbook style format. Follow the footsteps. Gather clues. Be a detective. Put the pieces of the puzzle together. My first after-teaching goal was to get my first book published. With the Lord's help, that was accomplished Dec. 2004 when "Humorous Happenings in Holy Places" (Tate Publishing) hit the market. Not only did that serve to respark my desire to write, it also opened up a speaking career for me. I've averaged one event a week since then. My second book, "And the Angels Laughed", is also published by Tate. Both will be available as audio books. I traveled to Mustang, Oklahoma, to the Tate Out-Loud studio the week of August 14th to voice both books. What an exciting time! What supercedes the joy of seeing my own words published is the joy this has brought to my family, especially to my eight grandchildren, who have supplied some of the funny happenings for both books. I've tried my hand, since finishing the two devotional book, writing fiction. I've completed my first novel, A Web Too Tight. At each meeting of the Lit Chicks, I share with them a chapter or two. If the rest of the world meets it with their enthusiasm, it will be a best seller.

July 12-15, 2009 - International Christian Retail Show

Press Release... July 12-15, 2009 - International Christian Retail Show, Colorado Convention Center, Denver, CO, USA...

Lighthouse Coastal Productions Client, Shirley W. The CBA-International Christian Retail Show is the largest annual gathering in the world of anyone and everyone involved in the creation and distribution of Christian products. It is the place where the Christian Retail Channel meets, and it all provides some excellent interview and story opportunities for all types of media. Many newspaper and magazine writers, as well as television and radio program producers, come every year and put dozens of interviews in the can in just a few days or use the time to scout for future guests or stories. Private rooms and other interview space is made available for media to talk with the hundreds of authors, recording artists and other personalities and experts who attend the show. CBA is the trade association for the Christian Retail Channel, serving the interests and meeting the needs of member Christian stores including independents, regional and national chains, church-owned stores, franchises, and marketing groups. These stores provide Bibles, Christian books, curriculum, apparel, music, videos, gifts, greeting cards, children's resources, and other materials. CBA and their member stores also work with associate-member book publishers, record companies, gift companies, and other product suppliers. Along with the Christian Trade Association International, CBA also serves the meeting and information needs of Christian stores and suppliers in over 50 countries around the world. In 2008 in Orlando, nearly 7,500 people attended the show, including 2,386 professional attendees and over 700 international representatives from 59 countries around the world. Christian store owners and buyers came to consider the products and services of 353 exhibitors in 992 booth spaces, including 66 first-time exhibitors. In addition to the exhibit floor, the Show includes Sunday Worship, idea exchanges for retailers, an awards program, autographings, workshops, and a host of receptions and events sponsored by various exhibitors.

Colorado Convention Center
700 14th St
Denver, CO 80202

Registration:CCC Lobby A
Sunday 8am – 6PM-MST
Monday 7am – 6PM-MST
Tuesday 7:30am – 6PM-MST
Wednesday 7:30am – 12 noon-MST

Ribbon Cutting: CCC Atrium Lobby
Monday 8–8:30am-MST

CBA Exhibit Floor:CCC Exhibit Halls AEF
Monday 8:30am – 6PM, soft close until 6:30PM-MST
Tuesday 8:30a.m. – 6PM, soft close until 6:30PM-MST
Wednesday 8:30am – 4PM=MST

Lighthouse Coastal Productions
Lighthouse News Bureau
466 Sardis Cutoff Road
Sardis City, AL 35956
tel. 256-281-9399

Shirley W. Why both, of course!

Homemade lemon-pineapple sherbet and lemon ice box pie followed a delectable meal of pecan encrusted sea bass, grilled vegetables and slaw with a light dressing with slivered almonds. Barbara is quite the culinary genius, I think we would all agree. The meal was a treat, though the eating was hampered by our laughter at Barbara’s “series of unfortunate events” in Atlanta, one of which began with a miscommunication of Steve asking for a strawberry (breakfast) bar and ended with her pounding on the door of someone else’s hotel room , a virgin strawberry daiquiri in hand!

The literary portion of our meeting began with good news. Gay has been selected for the finals for a piece she entered for Chicken Soup for the Wine Lover’s Soul! The piece tells of the opening of a rare night-blooming flower that offers the opportunity for an late evening party where pajamas or ball gowns are equally welcome. I had good news, as well. An article I wrote for a magazine called Valley Babies resulted in a job writing assigned articles.

We then enjoyed hearing a chapter of Gay’s novel, filled with conflict. I read my article written for the magazine. Alice shared a beautiful account about childhood memories of her grandparent’s home in Georgia. It was so well written, we could almost feel the tattered paper of the “faded valentines” discovered in her grandmother’s junk room. Shirley’s article about Lady Bird Johnson’s passion for life gave me insight into two innovative women, the article’s subject and its author. We were also treated to Lady Bird’s favorite recipe of chocolate drop cookies. Barbara concluded the meeting with two chapters of her novel, the first of which lulled us into thinking things were finally working out for these heartache-prone characters. Then the second chapter smashed back into suspense and discord!

Barbara’s house in the country is filled with lovely pieces of family history and I’m always so comfortable there. Our hostess makes you feel as though you could drop by at noon or midnight and be welcomed with open arms, a delicious meal, and maybe, just maybe, a virgin strawberry daiquiri!

Barbara’s Pecan Crusted Sea Bass (Serves 4)

6 fish filets (mild fish)
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1 cup self rising flour
toasted pecan pieces (Put in food processor and chop until you have small pieces)
salt and pepper to taste
pinch of smokey paprika
2 sticks butter (the real thing)
1/2 cup olive oil

Wash and dry your filets. Make an assembly line of the following four: 1 stick melted butter, filets, mixture of the eggs and milk, flour with salt, pepper, and paprika mixed in, pecans. Hint: Use just one hand so you can keep one clean to answer the phone. Heat 1 stick of butter and olive oil on medium heat in a black skillet. After you dip filet in each of the assembly line mixtures, brown in the black shillet. Don't crowd pieces. After all are browned, place them on a greased baking sheet and continue cooking them in a 450 oven for a few minutes - just until the pieces flake easily. Salt again if needed - a cardiologist nightmare.

Pineapple-Lemonade Homemade Sherbet

2 quarts whole milk
1 14-oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 20-oz can crushed pineapple with juice
1 1/2 cups sugar (actually, I use Splenda to save a few calories)
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 tub Crystal Light

Mix all ingredients and follow electric ice cream maker's directions. The lemon juice may appear to curdle the milk but this isn't a problem. I make this a few hours ahead and put it in the deep freeze to make firmer.

The Lit Chick Journal-August 2007...

Guatemalan cheesecake, indeed!

I always seem to begin by talking about dessert. I guess it’s my favorite, though the rest of the meal was scrumptious.

We began with a cream of asparagus soup garnished with bits of asparagus and bacon. We then moved on to a hearty green salad and chicken salad sandwiches on different varieties of whole grain breads. And then, there was cheesecake. Sherry began making it 5 days before the meeting. I’d never tasted anything like it. It had a pineapple flavor and was adorned with pineapples, cherries, and coconut. Very refreshing for a summer gathering!

Sherry lives in a historic house in Anniston that is filled with lovely antiques, including a high chair that belonged to her husband’s grandfather, which had been used by all the children in the family. She so graciously allowed Master Rafe to use it for his luncheon of rice cereal and crackers. (Rafe joined our meeting, as his Nana was otherwise occupied.) We were pleased to meet a new friend, Laura, who was Sherry’s guest. We missed Gay and Shirley, who sadly had commitments that couldn’t be changed.

The literary portion began with me reading the prologue of the book I’m working on about postpartum depression, as well as a piece about sleep deprivation. Barbara gave us a glimpse into the desperate mindset of Jack Pate, the fallen and now physically damaged minister of her novel, A Web Too Tight. We keep getting more entangled in this gripping story! Suzanne, Sherry’s friend and editor delighted us with a poem about a hummingbird. Suzanne has a melodic and soothing voice well suited to reading aloud. (That led us into a discussion about books on CD, and I realized that Barbara’s two books, Humorous Happenings in Holy Places and And the Angels Laughed are already available on CD.) Alice tickled us with her story about crashing a family reunion while at the Alabama Writer’s Conclave meetings. She was so popular folks were arguing over who would buy what they thought was the only copy of her book, Digging From Attics to Basements, a children‘s workbook for uncovering family history! She imparted more humor by reading a short tale of her youth which involved taking pride in cleaning the “la-las” at Girl Scout Camp. The other girls at camp didn’t share Alice’s enthusiasm for outhouse duty! Sherry wowed us once again with her proficiency and speed. She has finished her second book, Faith Flight for Empty Nesters, and read portion of the final chapter. The message was lovely: no matter what the circumstances, faith is the key to happiness. I don’t say it as eloquently as Sherry, so you’ll just have to buy her book.

We were very pleasantly surprised to get a going - home treat of Mississippi Mud Brownies, frozen for the drive home. I believe they were made by Sherry’s husband, Barry, who I hear is quite the chef. We all felt comfortable at Sherry’s house. None so much as Rafe, who spent much of the meeting rolling around on the rug and kissing the dolls our hostess had provided for his entertainment! As Gay always says, “A good meeting was had by all!” Our thanks to Sherry!

CHEERS!

Congratulations to Alice for her award at the Alabama Writer’s Conclave for a piece remembering her mother!

Congratulations to Gay for her piece about the Night Blooming Flower being chosen for Chicken Soup for the Wine Lover’s Soul!

Asparagus Soup:
1 can cream of asparagus soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1 can chicken broth

Stir and warm gently. I didn’t invite the flies, but they crashed the party! When everyone arrived at my house, I was running around like the proverbial chicken, as usual. Gay graciously mixed up the pomtinis, and Barbara was kind enough to blend the ingredients for the grape dessert salad as I finished up with the luncheon salad. The luncheon salad could be called “hodgepodge”, with all its ingredients. It was simply spring mixed greens with bits of mango, sautéed corn and whole green beans, along with grilled chicken tossed in a Romano vinaigrette.

We retired inside for the literary portion of our meeting, but first we had a champagne toast (lemon ginger ale for Barbara) to the success of our members: Alice’s award at the Alabama Writers Conclave, Gay’s piece being included in Chicken Soup for the Wine Lover’s Soul. We soon learned more good news: Shirley’s radio programs will be syndicated! And for good measure, we toasted Barbara’s safe return from her mission trip to Ukraine (and the fact that she was able to use the downward facing dog yoga position Gay taught her to extricate herself from the odd shaped Ukrainian bathtub in which she became stuck!).

I began the reading with a comedic piece I wrote about my early experiences with breastfeeding. Gay read a chapter of her novel describing a delightful character named Mimsy whose book club was anything but literary! Shirley read an article inspired by her continual experience of God’s favor. The piece challenged its readers to adopt a positive “color” for their attitude and mood. Alice shared a journal entry for her website about her extensive travel and how it has flavored her life. Barbara finished with a partial chapter of her novel detailing the day-to-day life of Molly, the saintly character who has put aside her own life and budding relationship to care for her paralyzed ex-husband. After we concurred that Molly was just too angelic to be true, Barbara foreshadowed her character becomes a little more human before the story ends.

As we grow as authors, we grow a little more like family with each meeting. I feel so blessed to have been invited to be a Lit Chick!

Thanks, chicks, for being my soul friends.

The Lit Chick Journal-October 2007...

Stuffed Pork Loin
By Barbara Eubanks

1 large boneless pork loin (butterflied)
1 bottle marinade (I used a Caribbean jerk marinade; honey mustard dressing would also work.)1/2 cup dates (You can use whatever dried fruits you choose, even a dried fruit trail mix would work.)
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup dried apricots
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
3/4 cup brown sugarsalt and pepper to taste

Marinate the loin in the sauce for about 2 hours. As we gather at one of our member’s house each month, we eat together, laugh together, and together we focus on each other’s work and accomplishments. We’re “sorta” like the mailman – neither rain, nor snow, nor can dark of night keep us from our appointed tasks.

January was Gay Martin’s time to host our group. Our faces fell when we read her email saying her kitchen repair work wasn’t finished; therefore, we might just want to cancel the meeting for the month. Never fear, Barbara Eubanks offered to trade months. With short notice, there was no time to polish silver and laundry the good linens. Barbara suggested we let our hair down and have a more casual affair – a cowgirl get-together. The other girls jumped on that like a June bug on watermelon. Gay offered to bring dessert and a prize for the best-dressed cowgirl.

Alice Duckett, the show-out, stayed up half the night preparing her costume so she could take home the prize; that she did with fringe, sheriff’s badge, guns, and all. Shirley was the dressed-up cowgirl; wouldn’t you just know that because that’s her trademark. Barbara wore her sequined green denim as if she was going into town for the square dance. Gay played the part of the cute cowgirl in the June Allison style. Bless her heart, Lori Boatfield with a runny nose, dressed in full costume, darling as always, called shortly before time for the meeting. Barbara heard screams coming from Rafe, Lori’s one-year-old. “He has my cold. I’m afraid I can’t make it; I just can’t leave Rafe screaming like this.” Barbara, being a grandmother and all, knew things such as that could turn on a dime, so she told her to come on if things settled down; her place was already set at the table (actually each place was marked with a can of beef jerky with a label bearing members pictures and names). Lori did make it – for the first hour - the eating time, anyway.

Although most meetings are more formal events where the hostess for the month brings out her best wares for serving and we dress to impress, this one found us laughing and hooting and hollering. We dived into the beef brisket, baked beans, baked sweet potatoes, salad, and mesquite sour dough bread as if we had worked mucking stalls all morning. The caramel cake Gay brought crashed all diets. Now not all was fun and games. We did finally get down to business and do our critiquing work.

Gay shared excerpts from her dream journal, and we made suggestions how she could work them into a piece of fiction. Shirley shared a chapter she had written for a friend’s new book; it was her best work yet. Alice read the piece she has written for the Black History feature for the Anniston/Gadsden Family Christian Magazine. Barbara read still another chapter from her novel, A Web Too Tight; she said it before the others could. “It needs work on placement in the novel.” “Ain’t” it great when work is fun and a time to share ideas and food with friends? Someone once said, Don’t take yourself too serious; nobody else does.” We surely didn’t this month.

The Lit Chick Journal-December 2008...

December Delights...

December must be the most exciting month of the year. This December was no exception. Even though I find myself totally exhausted each night from special speaking events, shopping, entertaining, pulling out boxes of decoration and filling each room with them, returning boxes to the upstairs storage, and then trying to clean up the mess I've made, I still love to celebrate the birth of Christ with all the glitz and glamour I can find, in addition to family and friends coming and going.

Sometimes I need a special event held at our house for me to be motivated to get things done, even if I don't feel in the mood for the chores somedays. This year, I was to host our Lit Chicks for the December meeting. I felt a great sense of satisfaction for accomplishing all the tasks on my list by the time the door bell rang with the first guest. Appetizers were out and the meal in the oven filled the house with an inviting aroma.

All of the Lit Chicks made it for the meeting, plus one exciting guest. Dan Griffin, author and producer from New York, graced us with his presence. During the meal, we discussed several current topics, but mainly focused on what the sagging economy was doing to our nation and to each of us as individuals. I commented, "I'm thankful my ultimate security doesn't rest in material things." I had no more than gotten the sentence out of my mouth when I felt my ring as I do habitually. I had a sinking feeling and thought, "This must be a test of what I just uttered." The diamond was missing from my ring. We all searched the floor in vain. "Oh well, it was a material thing," I despaired.

After our lunch, we sat by the fire as we sipped our Russian tea and critiqued each others work and celebrated our accomplishments since our last meeting. Although the loss of my ring overshadowed much of the joys of the day, I felt better when Steve returned home and assured me he had a rider for my diamond on our insurance. What a smart fellow he is!

After the guests had left and the last dish was in the dishwasher, I knew it was time to get ready for the next round. Kids and grands came and went from then until New Years Day. What a great season, albeit an exhausting one. I thank God for friends and family. I also thank him for reminding me my security doesn't depend on material things.

Shirley W.
